Japanese rule ended in 1945. In 1965 these treaties were ultimately declared "already null and void" by the Treaty on Basic Relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea. Administration of the Korean people continued until Japan's defeat at the end of World War II, at which time Korea became an independent nation albeit divided under two separate governments and economic systems. The modernization and industrialization brought to the Korean Peninsula by the Japanese continues to be the subject of controversy between the two Koreas and Japan. == Terminology == In South Korea, the period is usually described as the "Japanese Imperial Period" () or the "period of the Japanese imperial colonial administration" ().
